Sit-down Restaurants were aplenty in Lansing, serving up all sorts of delicious meals. You could enjoy fried clams at Howard Johnsons, or a filet mignon at Mountain Jacks. Many more tasty memories can be found here.

HOWARD JOHNSONS Howard Johnsons arrived in Lansing in 1955, with a restaurant on the north side of Frandor. The second came in 1963 with a restaurant and motel on South Cedar near I-96. LOU COOMES CHARCOAL GALLEY Lou Coomes Charcoal Galley opened on North East St., next door to the Nip 'n Sip Drive-In, in 1962. Lou Coomes was open until 1976. The original building remains in 2008, it is now home to a health clinic. View recent photo here.

KEWPEE HAMBURG SHOP Olive Burger. That says it all when it comes to Kewpee's. A Lansing institution, Kewpees first opened in downtown Lansing in 1923 on W. Shiawassee, remaining there until 1972. Another location on Grand River in East Lansing came and went, and a third opened in 1977 on S. Pennsylvania, but is now closed. All is not lost, Kewpee eventually came back downtown and is still serving those fantastic Olive Burgers in 2008! Check them out at Kewpees.com.
